Cem Mansur – Conductor
Cem Mansur is a Turkish conductor. He is educated in London at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, where he received the prestigious Ricordi Conducting Award, to further continue his studies at the Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute with Leonard Bernstein.
Mansur has been conductor of the Istanbul State Opera between 1981 and 1989. He was the principal conductor at the Oxford City Orchestra from 1989 to 1997 and the Akbank Chamber Orchestra from 1998 to 2011. In 2007 he founded The National Youth Philharmonic of Turkey, which has held numerous concerts in major European centers.
He has directed orchestras and opera companies in the Netherlands, France, Italy, the Czech Republic, Romania, Hungary, Germany, Sweden, Spain, Mexico, Israel, Croatia, Poland, South Africa, Finland and Russia, where he has been a frequent guest of Mariinsky Theater at the invitation of Valery Gergiev.
Widely recognized for his extensive repertoire and the creativity of his programming, he enjoys a strong relationship with Arvo Pärt: he gave the European premiere of Arvo Pärt’s Symphony No.4, and the world premiere of Pärt’s Veni Creator. He conducted the premiere of Elgar’s unfinished opera “The Spanish Lady” and revived Offenbach’s English opera “Whitington” by performing it in London.
Mansur is the President of the Ipswich Choral Society, the second oldest institution in England and the founding director of the National Youth Music Turkish Philharmonic.
